My parents' painting of his is a fishing boat in stormy weather with a lifeboat pulling nets. His ship pictures and ocean pictures were really great, IMHO. The painting is still over my mother's mantle, though it now belongs to me and my brothers. We want her to enjoy it as long as she's around, then we will be trading it between each other.

Thanks for posting this in your gallery of favorites.

What is IMHO? Lucky you to have this painting to share! What is the name of your piece? Maybe I can find the image.....

His fishing boats and seascapes are wonderful. Not sure if I have seen the one you refer to. There are many prints of his art pieces in my book. They were used for examples in his teaching. The book was first published in 1979.

IMHO is "In My Humble Opinion" - webspeak kind of like the icons are on dA. Yes, I feel most especially lucky about Mr. Gruppe's painting in that I will most probably end up with "custody" of it most of the time once Mom is finished with it, maybe when she and my husband, daughter and me (in separate households, of course) move to Santa Fe - she may decide to display something else in her new home. I don't remember the name of our painting, but it IS in that book...Mom has that as well. I'll have to do some investigating so that I can tell you which painting we have so you can look it up. (yay, something fun to find out! LOL)

Very cool, there is one called "Early Morning" in my book. Where there are men at the dock with fishing net and one man in the boat. The sun is just starting to come up. Maybe this one?

No, the one we have is a fishing boat out at sea in ugly weather with a manned lifeboat hauling in one end of net. Very high seas, the fishermen are obviously working very hard to both bring in the net and not capsize. I'll find out from Mom what the title is, and also have to see if she can find the book at the moment, then I can tell you where to look.

It'll probably happen later this week. :sun:

No worries, I love to look through my book, lol. There is another which sounds similar, but not it. It is called "The Rescue" but there is no fishing net. It was based on the idea of Homer's painting "The Wreck". It is in black and white though, but you really feel the sea and get a glimpse of the sinking vessel.

I remember this one - it's similar to ours but ours is in color. His style is so clear in each of his paintings that there is a similarity between most of his "high seas" fishing subjects. He had such a great sense of high seas storminess that it really seems as if one could just step into the dinghy and get splashed. I don't know why there was such an effect, since his style was not photographic, but there was such an immediacy about them that seemed amazing.

His work has lots of energy and gets the feel of it right. He did not like photographic style, his opinion was might as well take a photograph then.

I laughed when I read this because I have often said the same thing. If you have nothing to add of yourself, why bother. To show of great technical skills, so what. Sorry I have strong opinions about this as well. lol
